Three charged in counterfeit scam
Emerson Police announced that they’ve charged three individuals in connection with an attempt to pass counterfeit money on local stores. The charges come after nearly four months of an investigation that involved the United States Secret Service and six police departs from Bergen County municipalities.

Pascack Press first reported this investigation on Nov. 9, 2007. Shortly before that date on Nov. 3, three males had attempted to pass counterfeit $20 bills on two local stores while purchasing $1 items. According to police, when a clerk who recognized the attempted fraud tried to reject the money, one of the men exposed a knife to the clerk who then relented and accepted the fake bill before calling police. Immediate attempts to locate the suspects were unsuccessful.

In Emerson Det. Sgt. George Buono began an investigation in cooperation with the other agencies shortly after the incident. As nearby as Oradell, the same scam had been perpetrated. The police were able to secure surveillance tape that captured the suspects’ images.

On Feb. 27 the joint effort lead to the arrests of three individuals, 20-year-old Kelisen Brewley from Teaneck and two juvenile males also from Teaneck. In Emerson, the tandem all face charges of possession of counterfeit money, theft by deception and forgery. One of the juveniles faces charges of armed robbery in connection to the knife brandished during the incident.
